Hosting companies - The good, the bad and NearlyFreeSpeech.NET
Well, I am at work, or at least… I am supposed to be working. In these days I am helping Smartphone & PocketPC Magazine (btw, everybody owning mobile device got to check it out!) moving their site content to a Drupal cms. We have a test site which is down every other day. Today is one of the down day, so here I am.
Talking about hosting company, I want to mention that recently I moved thecarrers.com to NearlyFreeSpeech.NET, and I am very satisfied with the service so far. I pay as I go, so if nobody surf this site, I pay nothing!
But considering the average traffic I get, I should pay about the same amount I was paying with Aruba.it, but I get a much better service. First, the site loads much faster. Considering I am in Italy, and the site is hosted somewhere in the US, I don’t notice any delay. On the other hand, when I was in the US, and site was hosted in Italy, it was much slower. Second, I have SSH access, something that a lot of hosts in Europe don’t provide. And last but not least, I can finally access the database with my favorite database tools, SQLyog. I find it much more flexible and faster than the web based phpMyAdmin.
So, it was great to stay with Aruba. I had a reliable service and it was very cheap. The “bad” company* which is down every other day, it costs my company about twice as much. But NearlyFreeSpeech.NET is completely another story…
* I don’t mention their name. If you don’t like something, there is no need to put your attention on it.
